What foods should be avoided with Macular Degeneration?

Hi, Dr. Steven Ferrucci here with another installment of topics around eye Macular Degeneration from Visible Genomics. Visible Genomics provides DNA based Macular Degeneration Test to help provide a patient the level of risk on AMD or the risk of disease progression.

Today’s discussion is a 2 part series with part 1 about foods to avoid with macular degeneration and part 2 what foods reverse Macular Degeneration.

Eye Macular degeneration is a common eye condition that affects millions of people around the world. It occurs when the macula, a small area in the center of the retina, becomes damaged or deteriorates. This can lead to vision loss and other complications.

There are two main types of macular degeneration: wet and dry. While there is no cure for either type, certain dietary changes can help slow down the progression of the condition and reduce the risk of complications.

One of the key things to avoid food with eye macular degeneration is a diet high in processed and refined foods.

These foods are often high in sugar and unhealthy fats, which can contribute to inflammation and oxidative stress in the body. Processed and refined foods to avoid for macular degeneration include:

• White bread, pasta, and rice

• Packaged snacks and desserts

• Fast food and fried foods

• Sugary drinks and sodas

Another group of foods to avoid with macular degeneration are those that are high in trans fats. These unhealthy fats are found in many processed and fried foods, and have been linked to a number of chronic health conditions.

Examples of foods high in trans fats include:

• Margarine and vegetable shortening

• Fried foods, such as doughnuts, french fries, and chicken nuggets

• Packaged cookies, crackers, and snack bars

• Non-dairy creamer

In addition to avoiding processed and fried foods, it's important to limit your intake of saturated and unsaturated fats. These types of fats can increase your risk of heart disease and other chronic conditions and can also worsen macular degeneration.

Examples of foods high in saturated and unsaturated fats include:

• Red meat, such as beef, pork, and lamb

• Full-fat dairy products, such as cheese, butter, and cream

• Fried foods, such as bacon, sausages, and chicken wings

• Processed snacks, such as chips and crackers

Instead of consuming these unhealthy foods, focus on eating a diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats. These foods are packed with nutrients that support eye health.
